Because we did not install the turbos here, there is a possibility that the turbos were damaged during installation. Maybe an oil line was left disconnected and the car was started and idled for a few minutes before someone noted the oil pool on the floor under the car. The engine was out of the car and the opportunity for something to get into the intake is high. The engine could have ingested a hoseclamp or some foreign object, which has damaged a cylinder and causing excessive oil to breach the rings, causing smoke. Or maybe the turbos have a manufacturing defect like most have probably already decided for themselves. The fact of the matter is no one knows exactly what the problem is.

In this industry, if you buy turbochargers and there is a problem with them, you are required to send the bad units back to the retailer before they will send out another set to you. This isn't done just to create inconvenience for the customer, there is a much bigger reason - these are very expensive items.

As an example, lets say the turbos have a manufacturing defect, like a seal was left out. Garrett is going to send us another set of turbos (or perhaps just one new turbo and the other undamaged turbo) at no charge. They will cover the expense. Once we get them back we will send them to the customer at no additional charge. All is well and all are happy.

But lets say we ship out another set of turbos to him in advance before we know what the exact problem is. Then Garrett comes back to us and says, "one of these turbos failed because of lack of lubrication and the bearings and seals are scorched and burned... we can rebuild it for you at a price of $xxxx."

At this point, our company would be out a good deal of money due to something out of our control and not covered under our warranty, but the turbos have already been sent. I'm not passing any judgement on anyone in this statement, but collecting money in this situation would be a miserable feat.

We didn't install the turbos so we dont know the full story on them. I dont doubt Rich's abilities, but no one is perfect and sometimes things get overlooked (please keep in mind that this statement is a hypothetical - we dont know what the problem is yet).

So we really need to find out first what is wrong with the turbos before anything is done. Our process is no different than any other turbo supplier..
